A photoshoot at Blue Bay takes place on the wide resort beach near Sint Michiel, a quarter of an hour from Willemstad. On Curaçao the bay is also called Blauwbaai. White sand, a long waterline and palm trees in rows.
You drive into the resort to reach this beach, and at the gate you show an ID. Parking is free and close to the beach. Photographing here is no problem. Unlike at Marriott Beach, I don’t have to arrange anything through a hotel.

I use Blue Bay when you need space. An extended family of six or more can walk here without running into a cliff or a narrow passage. The children stay in the frame because the beach is wide, not because they have to sit still.
During the day there’s a lot going on: loungers in rows, swimmers, drinks being ordered. For photos that can be tricky, because you wait for someone to leave the frame. That’s why I start later here, when some of the palapas have emptied. The bay stays the same, just with fewer people.
In the morning the sun rises behind the beach, and at the end of the day it sets into the sea. Under the palms you have shade, handy if someone doesn’t want to stay long in the sun. Closer to the water you see the full curve of the bay, and on the side there’s rock if you want to leave the palms out for a moment. If you’re after an empty natural bay, this isn’t it. If you want a wide, well-kept beach close to Willemstad, it is.
In the photos you see the long waterline, the palm trees and the open sand, with the resort in the background as long as we choose the angle well.
