A photoshoot with children on Curaçao

A photoshoot with children on Curaçao
A photoshoot with children often raises doubt. Not because the idea is not appealing, but because children follow their own plan.
Whether it will “work,” and whether anything usable will come out of it: I understand that question. That is why I work without fixed setups. There is room to move, and room to do nothing for a bit.

In short

How it goes in practice

Children do not have to meet what applies to adults. Sitting still and looking at the camera is not the goal. They can explore, walk off, and come back. I watch the light and how the group holds together. The plan follows what happens, not the other way around.
We land first. Nobody has to do anything right away. After that, light direction, not commands. A shorter shoot where the attention is still there is better than going on too long because it “is in the calendar.” A drink, a moment of nothing: that is often when the frames that stay come out.
Every shoot is different. One child is at ease straight away, another watches first. Both are fine.

If a child is not in the mood

That happens. Sometimes right away, sometimes halfway through. Pushing, or “one more smile,” almost always works against you. I step back, shift the attention, or let it rest. Room often comes back on its own.
It is not a guarantee of perfect moments. It is a way to record how you are together at that moment. People who let go of that expectation usually get more back than people who want everything to succeed.

Age, energy, and timing

Young children have a short span and want to move. Older children can stay with it longer, but sometimes need distance first. That asks for a different approach, not a different kind of shoot.
Look at energy, not only at the nicest light. Straight out of school, or a skipped nap, rarely works. A moment when they are still fresh does. It sounds obvious, and it is often underestimated. If the energy drops, I slow the pace, or we stop earlier. That is part of it.

Clothes

Comfort counts more than “nice.” What pinches, or keeps needing to be pulled straight, works against you. Quiet colors, no large logos, nothing new bought for the occasion. A spare shirt for the little ones is smart.

More on that is on what to wear for a photoshoot on Curaçao. How the morning goes from there: plan a photoshoot on Curaçao.

At home, do not tell them they have to be good for the photos. That sets an expectation a child cannot do much with, and often does not want. Say that you are going to the beach, or to a nice place, and that I am coming along.
The smaller you make it beforehand, the easier it usually goes. No separate pep talk, no new outfit as a surprise that morning. Just an outing, with room to play. The photos follow from that.

When it fits less well

If everyone has to listen, sit still, or smile on command, this way of working fits less. Also if there is a fixed picture in mind beforehand that has to look exactly like that. Children do not steer the way adults do, and that is the starting point.
Ill, past their limit, or clearly no room for something extra: then moving it is wiser than pushing through. That is not a cancellation with fuss. It comes with working with children.

Your own children, or a larger group

With your own kids, a family shoot is the form. If grandparents or more than one household are coming, a larger family shoot fits better. Same approach, more people, a little more coordination.
Want to plan a shoot? Send the form. We look together at which moment fits the energy of your children.
