Planning a photoshoot on Curaçao is quick. The weather is harder to steer. The climate is usually mild, but tropical showers do pass over. Even so, I rarely move a shoot, also when the apps predict rain.
I look at the conditions and pick a moment that works. You do not need the radar open all day. I do that.
In short
- Light rain: we usually go ahead
- A downpour or a thunderstorm: we move it, or shift the hour
- Moving it is free
- I judge the weather, you do not need to check an app
How I look at the weather
Weather apps on Curaçao often disagree. I compare a few sources and look at showers, wind, temperature, and the place we chose. Anything useful can only be said about a day ahead. Until then we keep the appointment. No rushed cancellation three days out.
When we just go
Light rain or drizzle is rarely a problem. On the beach, or at the edge of town, there is often some shelter. This weather gives soft light. That is kind to skin tones, and it keeps the frame calm.
Changeable weather, with showers passing through, often works surprisingly well. Shooting between the showers, clouds keeping the light soft. I plan the time with room in it, so we can wait if a shower comes through.
A bit of wind is no reason to shift. Hair and clothes start to move, and that looks more natural than everything held still. An extra light layer for in between is enough.
When moving it does make sense
If we are soaked before the first photo, it is no longer a pleasant morning. A long downpour, then: we set a new moment.
In a storm or a thunderstorm, safety comes first. The beach is out then. We move it in that case too.
If it comes down to us really not being able to go, I get in touch. We look together at what is sensible. Moving it is free. A new day in the same week usually works. Sometimes shifting one or two hours is already enough, because a shower clears faster than the app promised.
I do not switch indoors as a standard. Only if it makes sense for that shoot, and there is a pleasant place.
Frequently asked questions
Does a photoshoot go ahead if it rains?
In most cases, yes. Light rain or changeable weather is almost never a reason to shift.
Can we move it if the weather really turns?
Yes. In a downpour, a storm, or a thunderstorm we move the shoot at no charge, or we shift the hour. I am the one who gets in touch.
How often does a shoot actually have to be cancelled?
Rarely. It has happened once that we truly moved a day. A few grey days, showers that would not stop, and the next day looked better. After a quick talk we shifted. On the beach the light felt brighter after all that grey.
Is rain bad for the camera?
A light shower is not. I work with gear that can take that. A downpour or a thunderstorm is a different matter, and then we do not stand in it.

What this weather does give
Not everything has to be a hard blue sky. Clouds make the light flattering. A place is often quieter. Wind brings movement without making the frame restless. It is often that not-quite-perfect weather that gives the photos their character.
