In this article I explain what the best time is to plan your photoshoot. We look at light, season, atmosphere and practical tips, so you are well prepared.

The importance of light

Light is everything in photography. It determines the mood of the photos, how colours appear and how soft or hard the shadows fall. That’s why I almost always work with natural light — the most beautiful light there is.

In practice, this means I usually photograph in the early morning or at the end of the day. We call this the golden hour: the moment when the sun is low, the light is warm and faces are softly lit. In the middle of the day the light is often harsh and bright, which causes squinting eyes, hard shadows and flatter colours.

The best moment depends on your situation and wishes. For example, do you want a relaxed photoshoot with kids on the beach? Then late afternoon is often perfect. For a fresh portrait shoot, the morning is often the most beautiful. And when it’s cloudy? Then we’re in luck — clouds provide even and soft light, even in the middle of the day.

The best time for different types of shoots

With children, timing is everything — not just because of the light, but because of their energy, hunger and mood. That’s why I always coordinate with families on what is practical and what fits within the beautiful light.

For small children, the morning is often the most pleasant: they are rested, have eaten and are still curious about what’s happening. Early morning or around 9:00–10:00 often works best, as long as the natural light is still soft enough.

Family photoshoot

For a family photoshoot with slightly older children, the end of the afternoon works well, especially on days with nice weather. This naturally creates relaxation and space to move, laugh and just be together as you are.

Portrait or couples shoot

For a more intimate portrait or loveshoot, both early morning and late afternoon (golden hour) work excellently. The warm, soft light creates a romantic and flattering atmosphere.

Seasonal advice for Curaçao

Curaçao has two main seasons that influence the best shooting times:

Dry season (January – September): The sun is strong and the light is bright. The golden hour (early morning and late afternoon) is then extra beautiful.
Rainy season (October – December): More clouds and occasional showers. This actually gives beautiful, soft, diffused light — often even in the middle of the day.

The golden hour is the period just after sunrise and just before sunset, when the light is warm, soft and flattering. On Curaçao this is usually between 6:00–8:00 in the morning and 16:30–18:30 in the afternoon.

It depends on the type of shoot. Morning light is fresh and clear — ideal for portraits and small children. Afternoon light (especially golden hour) is warmer and more romantic — perfect for couples and family shoots.
